_Partner relationship management (PRM) software is a system for running a partner program — onboarding, tiers, commissions, deal registration and co-sell tracking — in one place. Independent software vendors (ISVs) that sell through cloud marketplaces need marketplace-native PRM, where partner activity resolves against real AWS, Azure and Google Cloud transactions._

One of the most common questions a new VP of Partnerships asks is deceptively simple: where does our partner program actually live? For most ISVs the honest answer is a spreadsheet, a shared inbox, and three people’s memories — and every quarter that passes, more partner revenue leaks through the gaps between them.

The cost isn’t abstract. Registrations go unanswered, commissions get disputed, and partners quietly stop bringing you deals because working with you is harder than working with someone else.

Here’s how to decide what to do about it.

## **What is partner relationship management software?**

Partner relationship management (PRM) software is a platform for managing the companies that sell your product for you — resellers, referral partners, and co-sell partners. It gives partners a portal to register deals, track commissions and complete training, and gives you one system of record for everything those partners do.

A customer relationship management (CRM) system manages your relationship with buyers. PRM manages your relationship with the partners who bring you buyers. The two overlap in the pipeline they describe, but they answer different questions: the CRM asks “where is this deal?”, the PRM asks “who sourced this deal, what do they earn, and what do they need from us to close it?”

Most ISVs meet PRM the same way. First a partner program starts in a spreadsheet. Then the spreadsheet starts losing registrations. Then someone gets asked to evaluate PRM tooling — usually right after a commission dispute.

## **What does PRM software actually do?**

A partner relationship management (PRM) platform earns its place by taking over five jobs that otherwise live in spreadsheets and email:

- **Partner onboarding and journeys**: Structured paths that take a partner from signed agreement to first registered deal, with training and certifications along the way.
- **Partner tiers**: Levels like Registered → Silver → Gold → Platinum that recognize partner commitment and unlock benefits — see how tiers and commissions fit into a full partner program in [Launching a new path for partnerships](/resources/blog/partner-relationship-management/).
- **Commission plans**: The rules that determine what each partner earns — referral fees, reseller margins, co-sell revenue splits — and when the payment triggers.
- **Deal registration**: The mechanism by which a partner formally claims an opportunity, so the deal is protected from channel conflict. We walk through the full lifecycle in [our guide to deal registration software](/resources/blog/deal-registration-software-for-isvs/).
- **Collaboration and visibility**: Shared views of pipeline, files, and next steps, so neither side runs the partnership over email threads.

Each job is simple on its own. The compounding value is that one partner record connects all five.

## **When do you actually need PRM software?**

You need PRM software when the volume of partner activity exceeds what a spreadsheet and a responsive partner manager can track — typically somewhere past ten active partners or a handful of registrations a month. Below that, tooling adds process without adding revenue. Above it, the spreadsheet starts costing you deals.

The honest way to decide is to score yourself on two axes: how complex your partner program is, and how much of your revenue transacts through cloud marketplaces.

Low marketplace volume

High marketplace volume

**Simple program** (few partners, one commission model)

A spreadsheet is fine. Revisit in two quarters.

You need marketplace operations tooling first — PRM can wait until the program itself grows.

**Complex program** (tiers, multiple commission models, 10+ active partners)

Generic PRM works. Marketplace-native PRM buys you nothing extra here.

Marketplace-native PRM — this is the quadrant where generic tools break, because partner economics and marketplace transactions have to reconcile.

Two of those four quadrants don’t need PRM software at all. If you’re in one of them, a simpler answer will serve you better — and you should take it.

## **Why do marketplace sellers outgrow generic PRM?**

Generic PRM tools assume the deal closes wherever your CRM says it closes. For ISVs selling through AWS Marketplace, Azure Marketplace and Google Cloud Marketplace, the deal actually closes as a marketplace transaction — a private offer accepted by the buyer, often routed through a reseller as a Channel Partner Private Offer (CPPO).

That one difference breaks three things in a generic tool. Deal registration can’t confirm the registered deal ever transacted. Commission plans can’t calculate margin on a transaction the PRM never sees. Partner tiers can’t count marketplace revenue toward tier criteria, because the revenue lives in a marketplace management portal the PRM doesn’t read.

Marketplace-native PRM closes that loop: the partner registers the deal, the deal resolves to the marketplace transaction, and the commission calculates from what actually transacted. The registration is the claim. The transaction is the proof. The commission is the settlement between them.

If your partner motion runs through the hyperscalers, this is the requirement to put at the top of the evaluation — ahead of portal branding, ahead of training modules, ahead of everything demoware is good at. For the co-sell side of that motion, [Partnerships 101](/resources/blog/partnerships-101-build-a-winning-co-sell-motion-with-aws-azure-gcp/) covers how alliance teams build it.

## **How to evaluate PRM software as an ISV**

The evaluation criteria that separate PRM platforms for a marketplace-first ISV, in the order they should be weighted:

- **Marketplace transaction resolution**: Can a registered deal be tied to the AWS, Azure or Google Cloud transaction that fulfills it? This is the criterion generic PRM fails.
- **Commission model coverage**: Referral fees, reseller margins, co-sell revenue splits and finder’s fees are different payment structures. A program usually needs more than one.
- **CRM integration depth**: Registrations should pre-fill from Salesforce or HubSpot opportunities, and acceptance should write back — otherwise you’ve bought a second data-entry surface.
- **Partner experience**: A portal partners actually log into, with their tier, their commissions, and their open registrations visible without asking you.
- **Time to first value**: A partner program that takes two quarters to configure loses momentum before it starts. Ask every vendor what week one looks like.

A vendor that scores well on all five is rare. A vendor that can’t answer the first one isn’t built for the way you sell.

## **How Suger helps with partner relationship management**

Platforms like Suger build PRM directly on top of marketplace infrastructure, which is the architectural difference the previous sections describe. Suger PRM includes a [partner console and portal](https://doc.suger.io/prm/), [partner tiers](https://doc.suger.io/prm/partner-tiers/) with up to six configurable levels, [commission plans](https://doc.suger.io/prm/commission-plans/) covering all four commission types with standard defaults and per-partner custom plans, and [deal registration](https://doc.suger.io/prm/register-a-deal/) that links each registered deal to a CRM opportunity and a co-sell record.

Because the same platform manages marketplace listings, private offers and co-sell across AWS, Azure, Google Cloud and other marketplaces, partner activity and marketplace transactions live in one system — the loop generic PRM leaves open.

## **Frequently asked questions**

**What is partner relationship management software?** Partner relationship management (PRM) software is a platform for managing reseller, referral and co-sell partners. It typically includes a partner portal, deal registration, partner tiers, commission plans, and training — one system of record for everything your partners do with you.

**What is the difference between PRM and CRM?** A CRM manages your relationship with customers; a PRM manages your relationship with the partners who sell to customers on your behalf. PRM adds partner-specific structures a CRM lacks: deal registration, commission plans, partner tiers and a partner-facing portal.

**When should an ISV buy PRM software?** When partner activity outgrows a spreadsheet — usually past ten active partners or several deal registrations a month, or the first time a commission is disputed. Before that point, lightweight tracking is fine; after it, lost registrations start costing real revenue.

**What is marketplace-native PRM?** Marketplace-native PRM is partner relationship management software that resolves partner activity against cloud marketplace transactions. A registered deal links to the AWS, Azure or Google Cloud transaction that fulfills it, so commissions and tier credit calculate from revenue that actually transacted.

**Do I need PRM software if I only sell through cloud marketplaces directly?** No. If you have no resellers, referral partners or co-sell partners, you need marketplace operations tooling, not PRM. PRM becomes relevant the day another company starts sourcing or influencing your deals.

**How is PRM different from a partner portal?** A partner portal is the partner-facing surface of a PRM — where partners log in, register deals and check commissions. The PRM is the full system behind it: the tier definitions, commission rules, registration workflow and reporting the portal exposes.

## **Takeaways**

- Score your program on two axes — program complexity and marketplace volume — before evaluating anything. Two of the four quadrants don’t need PRM at all.
- If your deals close as marketplace transactions, make transaction resolution your first evaluation criterion. It’s the one generic PRM tools fail.
- Buy PRM when the spreadsheet starts losing registrations, not when the partner count hits a round number.
- Weight time-to-first-value heavily. A partner program stalls faster than a PRM implementation finishes.
